Op een ongewone schooldag in California pleegt de schijnbaar alledaagse leerling Leland Fitzergald een huiveringwekkende misdaad, die zijn leven en dat van zijn dierbaren overhoop haalt. In afwachting van zijn proces verblijft Leland in een jeugdgevangenis. Niemand begrijpt waarom een jongen van vijftien zo'n gruwelijke daad pleegt. Leland zelf lost geen woord over zijn motieven. Tot hij in de gevangenis Pearl, een meelevende maar uitgebluste leraar, ontmoet die probeert Lelands daad te doorgronden.
